Old Behavior On A New Day

Yesterday was odd ! Mother has been having issues again with...um...elimination . Her abilities now are much like those exhibited just before being admitted into the hospital awhile ago . The gait is again a bent-kneed shuffle , verbal interaction is rare and comprehension diminished . Last night , after returning from an afternoon visit with my dear friend , Mother was installed into her favorite overstuffed chair by the window . Seeing her in a near-doze state , I seized the opportunity to dash off to the loo alone . This accelerated function completed , a speedy return brought me back to the den to face Mother , sitting collapsed on the floor , looking confused and lonely . She missed me...the brain said "Stand" and the legs , lacking strength and coordination , said "No" , and down she went . Mother is not a big person , by any means , but she is a solid little thing and now outweighs me by a bit . Trying to lift a "dead-weight" with little leverage or strength is daunting . Somehow ( only by the compassionate response to impassioned prayers !) , the deed of returning her to the chair was done and two exhausted ladies faced each other from properly elevated positions . She is unable to get in or out of bed by herself and the stevadore mode must be employed (lift/maneuver/haul/hope !) . I do not know if this will improve as the "functions" return to normal , or if (as some have told me ) this is coming to its end . The fading abilities (mental , physical...) , the falling , and the fact that her mother passed away at the very age Mother will attain next month ,conspire to portend the end of a very full and productive life .
Omens may come and go , but she is in better hands, who alone will determine Mother's fate . Wish us peace , strength and the ability to calmly attend to whatever we face . Go forth and do likewise...
