The women in our family have always loved roses , and I am no exception .Every place I've lived has had them , either pre-existing or planted by me. One glorious year was part of a rose-test panel, where those darlings were planted, evaluated and even sent in with suggested names for the new breeds !
Three years ago , I was drawn to the plant display outside our local market . There in dainty modesty was The Rose . There are dizzying arrays of rose colors , each with their own fans, but for me...it must be pink. Here was a shining example of pink-ness...soft,without being washed out,but with a delicacy that draws one in . To add to the joy , it had a fragrance -aptly named "Perfume Delight"-with a deep and rich,old-fashioned rose scent !A note to the rose breeders...Why make a rose that smells like a fruit...or a spice...or worse... nothing ?!!! A rose without a fragrance is like a woman without a good personality...looks nice,but....
The prize was duly purchased and tenderly tucked into a sunny spot, with its roots happily wiggling in the proper soil/manure mix. Each year she provided me with four or five beautiful flowers, which were shared with special ladies , usually in need of cheering . This year started as had the others, until I noticed a brand new cane , strong and vigorous. We are now in October and the blossom count has passed twenty one !!!!! As I write ," the last rose of summer" is in plain view and blazing glory , breathtakingly beautiful and as fragrant as those before her . If the weather continues to be mild , those new red leaves bear more buds and the promise of yet more joy !
