The Giant Cookie Dilema
Isn't it funny how we fall into habits in cooking . Remember the story of the family who always cooked a particular cut of meat by cutting off one end ? The trim seemed to make no culinary sense .The oldest family members were polled until one elderly aunt remembered the cut resulted from fitting the meat into Mom's small pan ! Enter the Giant Cookie . No matter what recipe I used , the last bit of batter wasn't enough for a whole sheet of cookies , but was too much to throw away . The solution was to make a Giant Cookie . At first , the prize went to my dad , who always appreciated efforts to make him feel special . When I had my own family , my firstborn was next in line .Once he'd moved on , his little sister inherited the position of honor in the cookie line . Okay , here we are , sometime later . The cookies are baked , the neighbors suitably gifted with warm , fragrant goodies and here is the dilema . The Giant Cookie sits forlorn and unclaimed . Its opulent girth is far too big for Mother . What to do ? I gaze out the window seeking inspiration . No little kids around...no one needing its solace... Wait , who goes there ??? It's none other than the mailman ! If ever there was a beleagered soul who needed a bit of special care , it's him ! I raced outside with my napkin-wrapped prize and thrust it into his hand , breathlessly exclaiming , "I just baked and thought you'd like this ". His smile identified the next one in line , if only for today .
