Sweet Tea & conversation... a lovely way to spend a day

September 18, 2014

I have a new visitor to my side yard . She was discovered this spring while getting the pond ready for the new season . Turning small stacked resin tables over , I noticed a greyish-buff-colored lump nestled in the inside corner of one table leg . Thinking it to be an old mud-dauber wasp nest , a tentative finger gently touched the mass .Imagine the surprise of each of us when the "lump" turned out to be a tiny creature !
After quiet observation , delicate replacement and a mad dash to Google , her identity was revealed. Miss Mini is a Southern Grey Tree Frog ! She is a whitish grey , with a pale tracery of faint sage green and most surprising bold yellow inside her thighs . Her size is only as big as the area inside my  joined thumb and forefinger . There are two such varieties of tree frogs...one is endangered in this area and the other is not . Although they are identical in appearance , it seems they can be identified by their calls and DNA . Unfortunately , my summer windows are shut at night to keep out the roar of the neighbor's AC unit , so Miss Mimi's calls went unheard by me . Hopefully , those calls were heard by and responded to by a handsome Romeo of her species and more little folks will return next
 spring !
I am grateful for small blessings !
