We're approaching Memorial Day weekend and a cursory glance at the neighbors' yards reveals a uniform expanse of verdant green lawn around each house . Until you get to mine , of course .
An uncooperative sprinkler system last summer managed to kill off anything resembling real grass...not to mention various shrubs , put in with great hope and expense when we moved in .
The sprinkler repairs were made and all went well this spring...until you look for grass . There are tiny islands of live stuff roughly the proper color , but despite regular watering , they are unconnected by their kin . What does cover the ground between the islands are chartreuse blotches of shallow-rooted weeds that are delighted to soak up water intended for legitimate grass runners .
"Why not sow grass seed ?" , you ask ? Even more greedy than the weeds are the new birdie parents , overwhelmed at the voracious appetites of their brood , who are tuckered out and hungry themselves for...seed ? ...easy to find and sprinkled all over the bare ground ?
I don't really begrudge them a meal , but this would quickly turn into an exercise in futility...for me...for the "lawn"... sigh... and so , the blotchy bi-color prevails out front . Ah , well...

put down that green spray stuff which keeps birds away.
ReplyDeleteAlso a line with strips of cloth that blow keep them off too.
Get a plastic own and deposit him on the lawn.
