I was out early this morning , enjoying the scenery on a back road when I noticed something in the road . It took the old brain a moment to process what it saw and actually identify the object . Quickly pulling the car over to the side of the road , I leapt out to come to the rescue of a tiny turtle . Because of the time lapse between observation and identification , I had a mad dash to reach the little fellow before the huge dump-truck-on-steroids could reach him and seriously alter his appearance and life status . I must have made an odd picture because , just as I reached the intended " savee" , a car screeched to a halt beside me in the other lane to ask if I was okay . Unaccustomed as I am to mad dashes , my reply was somewhat breathless . Helplessly , I held up the critter and managed to reply " Turtle " . The lady , not satisfied with that response , asked with more determination , "Yes , but are you okay ??" . Nodding and grinning , I replied to the affirmative and she drove off ( probably now with a story of her own to tell !). Leaning over the metal barrier , a sandy spot next to the lake was selected , and the turtle gently deposited in safety . It seemed to be where it was headed in the first place , so it got an assist from this two-legger .
There had been a similar rescue on Sunday . The fellow who reached that turtle just before me , made an interesting judgment call . He put the critter back where it started from . Knowing kids , when they start out to do something , they are bent on completing the task . I didn't have the heart to tell him the turtle would probably just rest up a bit and try again ! That road was not the one chosen for the return trip !
