I went to a job fair at the local library the other night . A very large company had recently combined several sites into one huge enterprise and jobs were available . The meeting turned out to be not a job fair at all , where folks can submit resumes and arrange to be interviewed , but a how-to-apply meeting . The library had anticipated 75 - 100 people and were stunned to field over 750 responses ! Their mad scramble resulted in splitting the evening's meeting into two and the overflow went into a December slot . There was a local dignitary , the head of the library system. head of the aforementioned very large company, and a lady who was presenting the how-to .
We all showed up with our bright, shiny faces , eager for the opportunity for gainful employment .
By the time we left , only the most resolute were determined to proceed . You see , the application itself required a book to explain its use !...and a slide show ! Each slide ended with the same comment from the presenter ,"This is very complicated . The process is very tedious . You have to do this exactly right or the computer scanner won't read it properly and your application won't make it to be considered ." !! The frequent , fervent use of "keywords" and "complicated" seemed to suck the life out of many . Yet , in this economy , even this faint hope is grasped as a drowning man clutches a lifeline . No matter that this process of attempted application to hiring may take six months , nor that each step seems more complicated that those prior...there is the elusive "carrot" of that very real job . Onward and upward !
Just win the lottery.
ReplyDeleteSeems the logical next step...Publishers Clearing House refuses to bring me The Big Check (despite all my lickin' and stickin' ) and Prince Charming is not only on severe backorder , but edging toward Fairy-tale status for good !
