Wild Life

This has been quite a week for wildlife sightings !
Returning late one night from a shopping trip , I realized the porch light hadn't been turned on .
The door was duly opened and phone messages returned before venturing out again to bring in the groceries . On went the light...however...the movement that caught my eye froze all action (with the exception of the swiftly closed door ! ). With a small cry , shared by both the two- and four-legged , both fled . Disaster averted , there was time to heave a huge sigh of relief on both our parts . The noisy retreat by bumped trash cans was that of a little skunk ! She was a beauty , with broad white stripes and had been enjoying the bounty of spilled seed under my bird feeder . Thankfully , she didn't feel the need to share her "perfume" ! Tapping the metal storm door seemed to create enough racket to dissuade her return and the groceries were safely retrieved .
The chipmunks have been sampling those same seeds...stuffing their cheeks and larders for the coming winter ! They had better be cautious from now on , as something else has caught on to this food source . Noticing a strange bird out front , I checked further . What flew from the patio outside the windows to the other side of that garden bed had tan and brown stripes on a much larger body than the usual finches, sparrows and doves . Spooked by my movement , what flew away was a hawk !!! Bad news for all smaller than he !
Yesterday , I surprised two fawns - still bearing spots - munching greenery by the side of the road . With so much of their domain cleared for development , it's no surprise they venture wherever food can be found .
Speaking of foraging , it's time for me to rustle things in the kitchen for the next meal . Have a wonderful day !
