Sweet Tea & conversation... a lovely way to spend a day

Comfort Can Come In Small Packages

The rains are over for now . The windows are open to the soft summer breezes and the sweet fragrances they bear . As I seem to spend a portion of my days in the front room , my "window to the world " reveals wildlife large and small . Two weeks ago , a large doe ambled across the street and my lawn to plant herself firmly in my flower bed to munch contentedly on whatever her predecessors had left . Big brown eyes and silky ears notwithstanding , she was shooed away...her "Aw , shucks " unspoken , yet clearly heard !
The little birds ( chickadees , multi-colored finches ,wrens and sparrows ) frequent the feeder . Their sloppy eating style insures food on the ground for the mourning doves , squirrels and chipmunks . What a circus ! The chipmunks come here from somewhere across the street...tails up and racing . They arrive with sunken cheeks and leave looking like poster kids for mumps ! The squirrels are a hoot as they try to invade the feeder purposely hung beyond their reach . The metal awning roof is edged with tubing bent into scallops...UUUUU...with the feeder suspended midway . There is one little grey girl who is determined to beat the system and her contortions and valiant efforts are something to behold !
One of my favorites is the hummingbird . Hanging planters of fuschia , petunia and impatiens adorn the roof's edging...their bright pinks combining with the bicolor honeysuckle to furnish a beautiful buffet for her . Last night , just before sunset , the hummingbird was feasting on the butterfly bush out front . There were so many blossoms , it was easy to watch her green-jeweled self for quite awhile ! What a joy !
I am grateful for these gifts...they are of enormous comfort to me now , as are your kind thoughts and comments . I may now be the only one here , but you all make sure I am not alone...thank you !

  1. Hi Katy,
I had to smile at your description of the silly squirrel wanted to beat the system. That and your description of the chipmunk too. He sounds so cute with his cheeks all full. I love fushia's and had them when i lived up north. it's way to hot to have them here. they are just beautiful.
wish you could have taken pictures of everything, including the deer. It all sounds so beautiful and you described it well without the photo's.
    Thinking of you!
