Victorian houses have always interested me.There is a sense of grandeur about these stately buildings...very elegant, yet with a sense of whimsey in the wild "Painted Lady " colors chosen for the outside . HGTV"s "If Walls Could Talk" program showcases such beauties and the insides are breathtaking ! The quality of the handcarved woodwork, from the everpresent trim to the gorgeous fretwork above the doors is astounding . Add in the stained glass windows , antique lighting fixtures and the clawfoot tub and I'm in love !!! There is something about the big windows and expansive rooms that begs a family...and I have always wanted to own and live in such a home...to be part of that family.
My dearest friend collects houses. No ! Not the big ones, but those that charmingly reside on tabletops and shelves . She has an innate talent for decorating,so her houses are displayed beautifully,in real-life scenarios. They are so dear . During one outing together, she asked out loud why she liked them so much.We decided it was because we could imagine exactly what life was like in these houses...a life we yearned for and did not have. She now has a new fan-a young member of her family is now smitten with the little-house-love . Ah,the possibilities for expansion !
We cruised through the aisles of several stores known to offer such delights...carefully considering the merits of each house ( ...have that one...no,this one is too modern...) until the perfect ones were chosen.Moving on,the settings, lights , trees and extra people joined their companions in the cart, until all was complete (for now ! ). Somewhere along the way, a blue sea captain's home quietly settled in with my friend's loot. It is a lovely three story affair with turrets,a spyglass on the second floor bedroom balcony and a small dock, complete with dory. It followed me home . After a recent purge of old plants on my newly polished dining table, those robust survivors are content on a victorian marble top from a corner piece of some kind. Tucked among them is the captain's house . To add to the charm , the house came with a small lightbulb,to be inserted inside ,which, when turned on,completes the fantasy . One thing crossed off my own personal "bucket list " ...I'm now the delighted owner of a Victorian home !
Hi Katy!
ReplyDeleteawww your posts are so beautiful and i truly enjoy reading them. Are you sure you're not an author living incognito' under a pseudonym? :)
I know what you are talking about regarding the drive you took with your Mom the other day. I too have felt that way, especially if I am in the mountains of Tennessee where my parents grew up. It's a feeling you really can't put into words. But exhilarating nonetheless. Almost like a beautiful dream.
The hooo, hoooo, hooos sounds so fun! God Bless you and your sweet Mother. I went through last time I was here and read all about what is going on. I know it can't be easy, but you are a wonderful daughter sent from heaven for her. I knew a neighbor of mine once years ago that was suffering from the same thing. He was always trying to get away. I wonder why they try to escape? Maybe they are trying to escape from it all :O)
Your potato soup and the hot biscuits sound wonderful. In fact I have a whole bag of potatoes staring at me and I decided a couple of days ago that I would make potato soup. I will have to add the biscuits now to go along. I love the way you describe things, you have such a gift.
And of course I too, have always wanted my own Painted Lady and a few years ago I started collecting the Christmas Victorian homes with the one little light bulb to make them come alive. I hope to maybe take a picture soon and post on my blog. I would love to see a picture of yours!
I don't have good news on my blog today. But I am trying now so hard to deal with it :O)
(((hugggs))) and God Bless
The little houses are adorable . I love 'em!!
