Humor By Choice

In these trying times, personally and globally, humor can indeed be the best medicine ! Ever sat down to watch something funny...not been in the mood and it wasn't funny at all ? I think we have come to a point where we have to make the effort , so we don't miss the opportunity for mirth.Laughter is so healing and freeing...a precious commodity !
A case in point came on Public Television last week .As part of their fundraising efforts, they broadcast several of Victor Borge's performances . Some were from a private collection made available by his daughter. It was well worth enduring the pleas for contributions !
Victor Borge was a Danish pianist of amazing ability, who chose to bring the Classics to the public in an easy format . By combining beautiful music with pratfalls and comic chatter, one was painlessly introduced to a new world . You could,of course, look down your 21st century nose and find it all quite beneath you (even though those Three Stooges DVD's under your bed bring you to a giddy state ! ). OR , you could give yourself up to the opportunity at hand, relax and enjoy the absolute nuttiness and laugh ! He had a bit with a very proper opera singer who was desperately trying to finish her aria, that had me helpless with laughter and gasping for breath! Later,he conducted a full orchestra in "The Dance of The Comedians ", where he mixed up the written score, poking the pages onto the metal parts of the music stand (handing a piece to a lady musician to hold, only to need it back to play the final notes !) ,banished a naughty violinist for playing too soon and generally playing havoc with the whole performance . I sit here now giggling at remembered bits .
It felt so good to laugh without restraint ! I needed that ! Life is far too serious ,without time to laugh at ourselves and the funny things around us . It restores balance in an unbalanced world.Be on the outlook for opportunities...to be more yourself...peeking out from under your worries and laughing . Remember that old motto..."Smile - people will wonder what you're up to !"
