Today we are to see the new doctor . His nurse told me when the appointment was made that he likes to spend 45 minutes with new patients. We'll need every second !
My daughter-in-law spoke to her mother, who supervises a dementia facility, after she and I spoke at length about Mother's condition . I was advised to be most candid with the doctor today, not only so he understands the degree of incompetance and moods swings , but also the amount ofconstant vigilance and custodial care she requires, so that I get the help I really need. This is not the time to pretend all is well, when that is absolutely not the case ! This is a matter of treating Mother and saving me,so I can be more effective with her care.
The promise of relief is very emotional...like the kid with her thumb in the dike,so the town is saved from flood, only to realize help is desperately needed ,as the hole is quickly growing larger than her small thumb and finally spots someone coming to her aid ! Self-help books tell you to make a knot in" the end of your rope" and hang on. That is just what caregivers do.I hope this is a saving grace to help us both through this new stretch of hard road...and I am grateful for the opportunity .
