Aren't I Special...???
Strange things happen to me . Sometimes the things are nice, like the epiphyllum cactus flowerI wrote about in a previous post...or the little hummingbird that has come back to my feeder this year . Sometimes , however, things are truly strange . A case in point ? The screaming frog . Yes,I know, normally frogs make noises that sound like ree-deep or harrr-umpfff or something to that effect . I'd hoped that a native frog would find my little fish pond again, like the tiny green darling who sunned herself on the lilypad last summer. If the frog who's out there now is a native , one would have to question the land...or planet... of its nativity !!! The sound is chilling , coarse and truly dissonent . I tried to mimic its "call " and came up with a passable whistle , which it eagerly returned . We continued this for a round or two until I realized how patently unfair it was to the little one . Hoping for a partner like itself, it was, however trading sounds with a dry-land two-legger ! I stopped whistling and after a few hopeful calls, the sounds faded into the distance. I hoped that its mate was soon found, even if it meant a pond full of little screamers ! Weeks passed with no strangeness from the pond until tonight . Heeeees baaaaack ! Is the mystery frog an escapee form an aquarium who began life in a pond in South America or Africa ? If so,it's no wonder no mate has been found ! Despite the awful noise , it's sad to hear it out there all alone.
