There I was , minding my own business (for a change ) , and enjoying a quiet lunch in the sunny front room . A scuffle in the living room behind me begged further investigation . The Ever Expanding Cat had actually raised her considerable bulk and was on the window sill , nose-to-nose with a small squirrel , at the other side of the window sill ! The yew bush under that window, normally neatly trimmed, was sporting an irregular Mohawk and tucked between those scruffy vertical branches was a little grey girl . She peered intently inside , seemingly relieved to see me !
What followed was a strange variation of the Vulcan Mind Meld...she was trying to "tell " me something...looking deeply into my eyes . The exchange continued for long enough to bolt to the car to retreive my camera and record the event . The cat had long since lost interest...satisfied to keep one eye in our direction to make sure the interloper wasn't getting into her dish ! I felt awed by this experience , yet helpless to understand the reason for her visit . She finally climbed down and I raced to the phone to report to my friend . We giggled as she adopted the voice of Jerry Lewis for that of the squirrel... Lady...hey Lady ! could ya please sent out some peanuts , here ? We girls out here get hungry , too , ya know !
There were , of course , no peanuts in Mudville . I usually rely on the finches to drop enough birdseed to feed all and sundry , but when the feeder was checked , none was missing...the finches were on Thanksgiving vacation at their families' country estate and had spilled nothing .
The next day , a small dish was placed within her reach with her own seed and the obligatory peanuts...shelled , of course !
It was a relief to see her...to know she was safe...that she hadn't expired due to my insufficient understanding and paltry larder . I'm sure she doesn't really sound like that famous comedian , but it makes me laugh anyway . Hey , Lady...
Oh that's so cute, the squirrel in the grey flannel suit. just too cute, it made me laugh. They love the deer corn too, and it's very cheap ! So, hey lady did you get the picture of Mr. Flannel?

Hey Lady!;)
ReplyDeleteI am a clown you know.
The event in question was recorded on 35mm film...so it will take time to shoot the rest of the roll , develop it and importune my beleaguered friend to post the shots...even longer if I take a course that will actually enable me to do it myself !
ReplyDeleteMiss Grey Flannel now has her own dish , a sturdy clay plant saucer she can neither chew up , nor carry off !
