Today is grey and damp...the rain pelted down all through the night . Isn't it interesting how vibrant the colors appear on such days ? The grass looks so green !
Work is proceeding slowly on Mother's room . The very act of going through everything seems somewhat rude and invasive . I know she would want me to do so...but uncovering those saved scraps of paper...photos , addresses , cards , notes... sufficiently precious to her to be saved for all this time , and actually know what to do with them is difficult . I will share a poem I wrote several years ago, found among the bits :
I long to gaze on dear sweet spring
and then on most-loved summer,
But all I see out yonder door is more snow-
what a bummer !
Oh , to see tree's new-green leaves ,
feel warm sun on my skin ,
Yet all there is , is bitter cold
and snowplow's tinny din .
While winter sings to us of freezing .
dark grey , awful dirges ,
I'll seek elsewhere to satisfy
my longing , springtime urges .
Ah , sweet friend , turn to me
and I on you will shine .
'Til better verses come to us,
I fear you're stuck with mine !
Mother , obviously , kept this for the humor ! The rest her things await their fate...some to be "new" for others , some shared with those who loved her and others...too precious to part with , lovingly stored here . This sifting process must be done in short stints . I can only go just so far before a favorite outfit or dear photo is unearthed and the memories and tears wash over me . To skip this step before the "remodelling " is to defeat the purpose of mourning . This life just passed , must be examined and the results celebrated . Just as archaelogists learn of long lost civilizations by what they left behind , so do I . The things we choose to save reveal a lot about us . For Mother , relationships were central , as evidenced by all those scraps of addresses , photos , and mementos. She loved people and being in their company , whether to celebrate or comfort , made her very happy . She is a very hard act to follow !
