Sweet Tea & conversation... a lovely way to spend a day

February 05, 2009

Mother is safely in the van that takes her to "The Club" . As it speeds away , there are mixed feelings of guilt and relief...the former is common to all caregivers (a variation on the Superwoman theme ) and the latter - a deep sigh for freedom and letting go , if only for a few hours . Those who counsel us say this time is vital for our survival...a time to rest and return refreshed to the ongoing task before us . This task , willingly accepted , does have a tendency to consume us on so many levels and this time is a saving grace . What will we do ? Whatever we want !!! Yes , there are bills to pay and send out...yes , there is grocery shopping to be done . I suppose one could do housecleaning ( and to some that is freeing )...I may just take a nap !
Recently , a friend took me to lunch on one of these "off " days. The meal was nothing fancy...just the best burger ever ! It was the adult company and conversation...the supreme gift to be myself ...that was so nourishing ! The mantle of responsibility was lifted from my shoulders for awhile and I felt light and refreshed , indeed !
