Wonder
I switched on the outside light tonight and let my dog commune with nature one last time before we went to sleep. What I saw revealed in that light stopped me in my tracks . Let me state emphatically that I am not a fan of winter ! The very approach of the season, far too long and frigid to begin with ,turns me blue . I've been heard to say that I'll take my snow on a postcard, thank you and if you're so fond of it,you may have my share ! That said, there is one type of snow that fills me with wonder . Tonight, the earth seemed to hold its breath as large white feathery pieces drifted slowly down. There was no wind,no biting cold,no intrusive traffic noises...just a gentle sifting . Strange how at a moment like that, all seems suspended...quiet...peaceful. This joins other treasures that live in a special corner of your heart...like watching your sleeping baby , in awe of her perfection and utter dear-ness...seeing a quiet look of deep and timeless love exchanged by elderly couples...that too-much-feeling-for-words moment when someone you love surmounts a long time difficulty, with new-found skills, that will not trouble them again...and you can see the pride on their face. There is a rare right-ness in such moments, when daily concerns fall away and we find ourselves in a tiny peaceful place. Are such moments truly rare,or are we far too absorbed in the trappings of life to marvel at life itself ?

You can't get that world stopped feeling at any other season.
ReplyDeleteOnly winter has the breathless silence and stillness.
